Project Partners: Neighbourhood Justice Centre & Brotherhood of St Laurence

Funding: Neighbourhood Justice Centre

Project Date: Dec 2012-April 2013

About the Project:
In a series of Saturday workshops at the African Australian Community Centre, young African Australians, the Neighbourhood Justice Centre, Victoria Police and Victoria Legal Aid explored community experiences of the justice system in the inner West of Melbourne. They shared their stories about justice through creative workshops using drama, film, photography and music.  Storyscape worked in partnership with Playback Theatre, hip-hop artist Mantra (Rob Tremlett) and music producer Monkeymarc, with the result being two wonderful short films made by participants. The films were screened alongside powerful theatrical performances by participants, at a community event attended by police, magistrates and the African community. This work supports the recently formed Reference Group between young African Australians, Sunshine Magistrates’ Court and other justice agencies. It aims to further strengthen the relationship between young African Australians and the justice system.
